Kings Park Psychiatric Center Catches Fire

Residents report that a fire broke out at the abandoned facility on the morning of September 10.

Update - September 11, 2014 - The  fire has been confirmed as having occurred in Building 44 of the abandoned Psychiatric Center 

Update - 1:30 PM - The fire has reportedly been brought under control. According to SCPD officials a dispatch call was originally received at 6:58 AM, and members of the Arson Squad have since been dispatched. The investigation is ongoing.

Original Story - September 10, 2014 - Eyewitness accounts report that fire crews have been battling a blaze that sparked in one of the abandoned Kings Park Psychiatric Center’s buildings on the morning of Wednesday, September 10.

Fire crews arrived on the scene around 7:00 in the morning, and portions of Old Dock Road were closed. Residents have reported smelling a foul odor in the air following the fire.

No injuries have been reported, however the buildings of the psychiatric center were largely insulated with asbestos when originally constructed.

At this time it is not clear which of the center’s buildings have been impacted by the fire. Information is sparse, but we will provide updates as they become available.
