Cold Spring Harbor, NY - September 8, 2016 - You’d think with the arrival of those yellow school buses that the party would be over, however, it isn’t, not just yet. Summer lingers through September, and this lingering is more busy than idle, especially at the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium. Two fun filled specials are instore for Hatchery visitors. One is the seasonal return of the ever popular Pollywog Adventures, a series of classes for youngsters 2 to 5 years of age, and the other is the Hatchery’s annual Fall Festival, an event for kids of all ages.

Pollywog Adventures returns Wednesday September 28 th and meets each Wednesday and Thursday morning for an hour starting at 10:00 am through the fall and winter months. Tots and their caretakers can experience an hour of fun-filled nature activities, with fish feeding and live animal presentations included along with story time and related crafts. It’s a friendly environment with refreshments for participants. The price is friendly too as Pollywog Adventures is free with general admission.

The Hatchery’s annual Fall Festival is a day set aside to celebrate the natural environment. On Saturday, September 24 th , (rain date, Oct 1 st ), visitors can spend the day, from 10:00-4:30 having fun while learning about fresh water ecology and pond animals, such as the trout raised at the Hatchery. The Hatchery’s two aquarium buildings are open to tour and there’s fishing for trout by kids 12 years of age and under with all gear provided. In addition to the booths set up by participating environmental organizations, there will be games, crafts and plenty of food and refreshments for all kids of all ages. General admission gets you in, $6 Adults; $4 Kids, ages 3-12 and seniors 65 & up; Under age 3 and members free.

The Hatchery, which after 99 years of operation as a State facility, opened as a private non-profit educational institution in 1982. Its visitors can tour two aquarium buildings which house many species of freshwater fish, aquatic reptiles and amphibians, all native to New York. There are six outdoor ponds where brook and rainbow trout are raised and sold to enthusiasts who use them to stock their ponds. In addition to the trout ponds, the Hatchery also maintains a warm water fish pond and a turtle pond. Catch & Keep Trout Fishing is a popular addition to Hatchery activities. The Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium is open year round, seven days a week, from 10:00 to 5:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, June, July and August, open until 6: 00 p.m.
