LI Haunted House Shut Down this Season Due to Superstorm Sandy Damages
We're getting close to the one year anniversary of the east coast getting hit with the destructive wrath of Superstorm Sandy. Despite being a year removed, remnants of her damage are still being felt. One of those places still effected by Sandy is a popular haunted house which has been an attraction for children, teens, and adults, for the last two decades.
Since the early 1990’s, the Bayville Firehouse’s Haunted House has been a staple to that community but damages done by Sandy has forced it to shut down. Props from the local haunted house attraction stored in a basement were irreparably destroyed by water damage when it flooded last year.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the volunteers that have put in countless hours to make this a successful event for the Bayville Fire Company.” Bayville firemen posted on their website. “We also give special thanks to all of our dedicated fans and supporters over the last two decades. We could not have done it without you. The sheer terror combined with smiles on your faces will be missed.”
Mayor Watson called the firehouse a vital part of the community. The haunted house has been a highly successful event in the two decades it was open. Between donations and the $13 cover charge, the firehouse was able to buy themselves a new $100,000 ambulance.
“It brought the village together,” The mayor said in an interview to CBS news. “It was a good time to see people maybe that you hadn’t seen in awhile, and we all put makeup on and the costumes and stuff like that.”
