Reps. Zeldin, Garbarino Announce First FIMP Construction Contract Award

Written by Chris Boyle  |  07. September 2021

Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1) and Congressman Andrew Garbarino (R, NY-2) have announced that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) awarded Contract 1 of the Fire Island to Montauk Point (FIMP) project to Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company for nearly $47.5 million, representing another major step toward getting this decades-in-the-making project underway.

The first FIMP construction contract will cover the dredging of Fire Island Inlet and sand placement at Gilgo Beach and Robert Moses State Park. The Army Corps formally began the bid solicitation process on July 1st and official bid opening began in early August.

“The awarding of the FIMP project’s first construction contract is a major step toward making a reality this long overdue effort to improve and secure the long-term health and viability of Long Island’s environment, economy and coastal way of life,” said Congressman Zeldin. “FIMP has been among my top priorities since I came to Congress in 2015, and my team and I worked tirelessly to successfully secure authorization for FIMP during the 116th Congress, through December 2020 appropriations legislation. I am grateful to the Army Corps and all the local stakeholders for their continued commitment to efficiently move forward and finally get this project over the finish line for Long Islanders.”

“I am pleased to see the Fire Island to Montauk Point project is on track and continuing to move forward,” said Congressman Garbarino. “Awarding this first contract is an encouraging step towards long needed action to help preserve and protect our coastline and it would not be possible without the hard work of the Army Corps and committed local stakeholders. Taking care of Long Island’s coastline and waterways is essential for the health, safety, and prosperity of our community. I am proud to join Congressman Zeldin in helping move this project forward and I thank him for his leadership on this issue.”

The multi-billion-dollar FIMP project would provide essential dredging and shoreline projects spanning 83 miles of Long Island coastline. The massive project includes a variety of coastal and wetland restoration projects that will use the natural environment to reduce flooding, erosion and storm damage, while also preserving the natural environment and habitat for wildlife. It also promotes various coastal management initiatives for the bay side of the barrier beaches.

In June, Congressman Zeldin and Congressman Garbarino announced that all six local Project Partnership Agreements (PPA) had been signed and sent to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. That same week, USACE formally began the bid solicitation process for FIMP’s initial construction. New York State signed the final PPA on August 5th and it was executed by USACE the following day.
