Tropical Storm Warning Remains In Effect For Suffolk County As Hermine Drifts Up Coast

Written by Brian Re  |  05. September 2016

With Hermine now being referred to as Post-Tropical Storm Hermine, current projections indicate that Long Island will not be experiencing the full effects of the storm. Though diminished from previous forecasts, impacts are still expected as Suffolk County remains on Tropical Storm Warning.  New York City and Nassau County were removed from the Tropical Storm Warning overnight as the storm continues its journey on a more southeast track than initially anticipated.

The storm will spend the majority of Monday traveling north, far off the coasts of Delaware and New Jersey, before weakening and shifting east during the afternoon on Tuesday.  The National Weather Service is warning of minor coastal flooding for Suffolk County's South Shore as well as dangerous rip currents and high surf.

Additionally, tropical storm-force wind gusts between 40 and 50 mph are expected, with isolated gusts potentially reaching 55 mph.  Residents are advised to prepare for the impacts of the strong winds by securing properties that could be affected. Moderate beach erosion and damage to marinas is possible, but Long Island will not be experiencing any significant rainfall as a result of the storm.
