Baldwin Woman Arrested for DWI with 2-Year-Old Child Sitting Unrestrained in the Rear

Hempstead, NY - September 5, 2016 - Hempstead Police report the arrest of a Baldwin woman for Driving While Intoxicated (Leandra Law) which occurred on Monday, September 05, 2016 at 12:55 a.m. in Hempstead.

According to police, Hempstead Police were on patrol when they observed Janelle Jessup, 34, of Badwin loperating a 2013 Hyundai southbound on Westbury Boulevard.  As the officers followed Jessup they observed her fail to stop for two stop signs at which time the officers attempted to conduct a vehicle and traffic stop.  Jessup continued driving south onto Bennet Avenue, where she collided with a park vehicle at the intersection of Bennet Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue.   As the officers approached the vehicle they observed a 2 year old male child unrestrained in the rear of the vehicle.  While conducting an investigation it was determined that Jessup was intoxicated and placed under arrest. There were no injuries and the child was released to a friend.

Jessup is charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated with a child under 15, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation 1st degree, Operating a Motor Vehicle while impaired by Alcohol, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Unrestrained child less than four years old in the rear seat and multiple traffic violations.
