LIRR Special to Inaugural Suffolk County Marathon Departs Penn Station 5:30 a.m. Sunday, September 13

Long Island, NY - September 4, 2015 - MTA Long Island Rail Road has scheduled a special, early morning train for competitors and fans heading east for the inaugural Suffolk County Marathon and Half-Marathon on Sunday, September 13, an event that will benefit Suffolk County veterans.

The LIRR’s Marathon Train will depart Penn Station at 5:29 a.m., timed to get long-distance runners and running fans to Babylon Station where they will connect to Suffolk County Marathon shuttle buses and Heckscher State Park in East Islip for the start of the race. The Marathon Special will stop at Woodside, Jamaica and Lynbrook and then make all local stops to Babylon, arriving there at 6:45 a.m. Regular off-peak fares are in effect.

At Babylon, customers can connect to the Suffolk County Marathon Shuttle Buses. The bus will connect with the special train that arrives at 6:45 a.m. For fans who want an earlier start can catch the regularly scheduled 4:54 a.m. train from Penn Station, which arrives at Babylon at 6:09 a.m. The Suffolk County Marathon Shuttle Bus will connect to that train as well.

After the marathon, two buses will depart from Heckscher State Park. The first bus will depart at 12:30 p.m. for a connection to the 1:28 p.m. westbound train from Babylon, which arrives at Penn Station at 2:45 p.m. The second bus will depart the park at 3:30 p.m., for a connection to the 4:28 p.m. westbound train from Babylon, which arrives at Penn Station at 5:45 p.m.

Participants in the marathon and half-marathon, the net proceeds of which will help expand and enhance veteran services in Suffolk County, will race along a route that will take them through the county’s parks, along its waterfront and through the downtowns of Oakdale, Sayville, Bay Point, Blue Point and Patchogue. The finish line is back at Heckscher where the Taste of Long Island Festival, featuring live musical entertainment and Long Island’s own farm-fresh produce, food, craft brews, and award-winning wines, will be under way. The Suffolk Marathon is designated as a Boston Marathon qualifier.
