Woman Seriously Injured in Motor Vehicle Crash Involving Stolen Vehicle

Deer Park, NY - September 2, 2013 - Suffolk County Police First Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash involving a stolen vehicle that seriously injured a woman in Deer Park last night.

A Suffolk County Police Highway Patrol officer initiated a routine traffic stop of a 2012 Kia Forte at 9:58 p.m. for exceeding the posted speed limit of 45 mph on the westbound service road of Sunrise Highway at the intersection of Commack Road in Islip.

When the officer approached the vehicle, the driver sped away and a pursuit was initiated. The pursuit exceeded 100 mph and several cars were almost struck by the fleeing vehicle. The pursuit was terminated a short time later and the vehicle was lost in the area of Grand Boulevard in Deer Park.

First Precinct officers located the vehicle at 10:06 p.m. after it had been involved in a crash with a 2006 Chevy Trailblazer at the intersection of West 6th Street and Central Avenue in Deer Park. The crash caused the Trailblazer to catch fire. The driver of the Kia attempted to flee on foot but the officers were able to apprehend him a short distance from the scene of the crash.

The passenger in the Kia, Brooke Moody, 33, of Bay Shore, was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip with serious head and facial injuries. The driver of the Kia who is a white male in his 40s, has yet to identified and was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Trailblazer, Frank Cassano, 42, of Lindenhurst, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was also treated at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Police discovered that the Kia was reported stolen in Bay Shore on August 27.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks. The investigation is continuing and charges are pending. Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the pursuit or the crash and has not been interviewed to call the First Squad at 631-854-8152.
