Walk to End Alzheimer’s is more than a walk. It is an experience for 3,000+ participants on Long Island who will learn about Alzheimer’s disease and how to get involved with this critical cause, from advocacy opportunities and clinical studies enrollment to support programs and services. Walk participants also honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease with the poignant Promise Garden ceremony. At the beginning of the Walk, participants hold high a Promise Flower based on the reason for their involvement:

Blue: I have Alzheimer’s.
Purple: I have lost someone to Alzheimer’s disease.
Yellow: I am supporting or caring for someone with Alzheimer’s.
Orange: I support the cause and a vision of a world without Alzheimer’s

“This disease can be one of isolation. Walk day is a day of hope where everyone unites and walks together to get one step closer to our vision of a world without Alzheimer’s,” said Karen Blank, Associate Director of Development at the Long Island Chapter of The Alzheimer’s Association.

In addition to the 2 mile walk, participants will enjoy food, entertainment, speakers and a special tribute to those who have experienced or are experiencing Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today’s more than 5 million Americans to as many as 16 million by 2050.
