Governor Cuomo Announces Suspension of Construction-Related Lane Closures to Ease Travel During Labor Day Weekend

Written by Long Island News & PR  |  31. August 2016

Albany, NY - August 30, 2016 - Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that non-essential lane closures for road and bridge construction projects on New York State highways will be suspended from 6 a.m. on Friday, September 2, to 6 a.m. on Tuesday, September 6, in order to accommodate travelers during the busy Labor Day holiday weekend.

The construction suspension is in keeping with Governor Cuomo's Drivers First initiative, which prioritizes the convenience of motorists to minimize traffic congestion and travel delays due to road and bridge work. Some work may continue behind permanent concrete barriers or for emergency repairs.

"New York is committed to helping ensure travelers get where they need to go as quickly and with as little hassle as possible during this busy holiday weekend," Governor Cuomo said. "I wish all New Yorkers a Happy Labor Day and urge travelers to drive safely and responsibly."

New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Matthew J. Driscoll said, "Governor Cuomo's Driver's First policy makes it easy for New Yorkers to get on the roads and visit all of the wonderful cities, beautiful natural resources and exciting attractions this state has to offer without worrying about traffic delays from road construction. As always, drivers should remember to pay attention to the road and stay off their cell phones during this busy travel weekend."

Thruway Authority Acting Executive Director Bill Finch said, "Governor Cuomo's Drivers First Initiative plays an important role in ensuring travelers have a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend. The Thruway Authority is pleased to once again join the Department of Transportation in mitigating traffic by suspending construction projects on our roadways during this busy travel time."

There will be slight variations for certain Thruway projects based on previous traffic volume. A detailed schedule of Thruway lane closures throughout the holiday weekend is available here.

Travelers are reminded to check 511NY by calling 511 or by accessing www.511ny.org before departing. The free service allows users to check road conditions or link to air and transit information.

Mobile users can download the updated, free 511NY mobile app from the iTunes or Google Play stores. The app now features Drive mode, which provides audible alerts along a chosen route while a user is driving, warning them about incidents and construction. Users can set a destination prior to departing and receive information on up to three routes.
