Beaches in Shirley and Bay Shore Closed to Bathing

Suffolk County, NY - August 30, 2016 - Shirley Beach in Shirley and Benjamin Beach in Bay Shore are  closed to bathing due to the finding of bacteria at levels that are in excess of acceptable criteria.

Four additional beaches remain closed due to unacceptable levels of bacteria:
According to Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. James Tomarken, bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.
