Officer Helps Rescue Choking Victim in Middle Island

Middle Island, NY - August 27, 2013 - A Suffolk County Police Sixth Precinct officer, along with the Middle Island Fire Department, helped save a man that was choking at a Middle Island group home yesterday .

Officer Michael Meehan responded to a 911 call at 6:52 p.m. at the Middle Island ICF group home.  The caller stated that a man was choking and that workers were attempting to administer the Heimlich maneuver.  When Officer Meehan arrived at the home, which is for adults with developmental and emotional challenges, the victim’s airway was still obstructed.   Officer Meehan administered the Heimlich maneuver and managed to dislodge a piece of food and the victim was able to breath but was still struggling.  When personnel from the Middle Island Fire Department arrived, they removed the remainder of the food and administered oxygen.
The 45-year-old victim, who lives at the home, was transported to St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson where he was in critical condition.
