Senator Ken LaValle: Measure For Commemorative 9/11 License Plates is Now Law
New York, NY - August 28, 2018 - Senator Ken LaValle announced his measure to create commemorative 9/11 license plates is now law. The legislation also provides for funds to be donated to the World Trade Center Memorial Scholarship Program.
The bill (S6072/A.7715) commemorates the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks by authorizing the issuance of distinctive commemorative license plates. Portions of the charges collected for the plate would be used for the purpose of providing scholarship money for the families of the September eleventh victims.
Senator Ken LaValle said, “On September 11, 2001, our nation and, in particular our state, experienced an unforgettable tragedy. Nearly 3,000 New Yorkers lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. The new license plates will provide a measure of comfort for the families of those who tragically lost loved ones on that day. An additional measure of relief will be knowing children of the deceased will be able to access scholarship funds for college tuition. I am pleased that this measure was signed into Law.”
The legislation authorizes NYS Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to create distinctive commemorative New York State license plates. Portions of the fees for the plates would be collected and deposited into the “World Trade Center Memorial Scholarship Program”. An annual service charge of twenty-five dollars would be applied to the plates by the DMV. Twenty dollars of this annual sum shall be deposited to the World Trade Center Memorial Scholarship Program, which was established under section 608 of the Education Law. Assemblyman Fred Thiele was the sponsor of the legislation in the Assembly.
