Freeport, NY - August 22, 2016 - Marine life and Long Island are intimately entwined. LI towns relied on fishing for centuries. Horseshoe crabs, loligo squid, striped bass, and the osprey all share important aspects of LI’s marine history, economy, and pride. This history and more will come to life this fall in an art exhibit called “Sea Creatures and Others: Natural History of Long Island.”

On Sunday, September 25, 2016 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM The South Nassau Unitarian Universalist Congregation (SNUUC) located at 228 South Ocean Ave. Freeport, LI will host an art opening for two local artists celebrating the marine life which surrounds Long Island as well as the natural history of the island. Program is free.


About the Artists:
Amanda Levine earned a B.S. in Marine Vertebrate Biology and Environmental Studies at Stony Brook University and returned to Stony Brook for her M.A. in Marine Conservation and Policy. Her deep understanding of the natural world shows through in her artwork. She now aims to use art as a means to communicate scientific ideas and conservation issues.

Jan C. Porinchak’s is a Long Island, New York artist whose detailed works in a variety of media illustrate the exquisite intricacy of natural history subjects. His work has been displayed at the New York State Museum, and won a Jury award for excellence at the annual Focus on Nature exhibit.
