Erratic Man in Custody After Discharging Firearm in Hempstead, Officials Report

Hempstead, NY - August 22, 2017 - The Third Squad reports the arrest of a Hempstead man for Criminal Use of a Firearm that occurred on Monday, August 21, 2017 at 6:58 pm in Hempstead.
 
According to detectives, Hempstead Police Officers received a call for a disturbance at 40 Mason Street. Upon arrival, police were met by a female complainant that stated defendant Cornell Jefferson, 33, was acting erratically. 
 
A few minutes later several gun shots came from an upstairs window. Officers were forced to retreat and take cover and request additional units. The defendant then started to throw various objects out the window into the surrounding yards. 
 
After a brief barricade, defendant Jefferson came out of the home and was placed under arrest at 7:30 pm. He was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation. There were no injuries. A magazine for a Springfield Arms handgun, a Springfield XDM handgun and several shell casings were covered at the scene. 
 
Defendant Jefferson is being charged with Criminal Use of a Firearm 2nd Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree, 8 counts of Reckless Endangerment 1st Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd Degree. He will be arraigned as soon as medically practical.
 
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
