Cops: Bayville Motorist Found Passed Out Drunk with Children, Ages 2 and 3, in Vehicle

Bayville, NY - August 22, 2017 - The Nassau County Police Department reports the arrest of a Bayville man for Driving While Intoxicated – Leandra’s Law that occurred on Monday, August 21, 2017 at 5:30 pm in Bayville.
 
According to police, 911 received a call for a male driving erratically eastbound on Bayville Avenue. Upon arrival, police observed a 2009 black Toyota stopped in front of 371 Bayville Avenue. The driver was slumped over the steering wheel and two children ages 2 and 3 were seated inside of the vehicle. The officers observed the driver to have bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and smelled a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. Defendant Carlos Ruiz-Salazar, 33, was placed under arrest. His children were released to a relative.
 
Defendant Ruiz-Salazar is being charged with 2 counts of Aggravated Driving Intoxicated (Child under 15) – Leandra’s Law, 2 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Driving While Intoxicated and Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated. He will be arraigned on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at First District Court, Hempstead.
 
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
