Bayport, NY - August 21, 2018 - Suffolk County Police arrested a Bayport woman on Monday, August 20, for a room rental scam that victimized five people.
 
Between September 2017 and June 2018, Virginia Wimmer advertised a room for rent in her home, located at on Gillette Ave., on Craigslist. On five separate occasions, potential renters gave Wimmer between $600 and $1200 as deposits on the room. As the move-in date approached, Wimmer would tell the renter the room was no longer available and refused to return the deposits.
 
Fifth Squad detectives charged Wimmer with Scheme to Defraud 1st Degree and she will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip today.
 
Detectives are asking anyone who may have been a victim of Wimmer to contact the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.
 
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
