On Wednesday, a 60-year-old man was out in the Long Island Sound near Rocky Point when his jet ski broke down. A friend of the jet skier called for help at about 6:30pm, more than three hours after he was overdue to return.

A Suffolk County Police Helicopter responding to the call spotted the abandoned jet ski around 7pm in the Sound. Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers also responded to the distress call and found the man about a quarter mile away from his jet ski, attempting to swim back to the beach. The man, who was still about three quarters from shore, was wearing a life jacket.

Police Officers Michael Malone, and Shawn Mooney took the man aboard their vessel and transported him to shore where he refused medical attention, according to police.
