SPCA Charges Central Islip Man with Starving Dog in Metal Crate in Basement

On Friday,  August 16, 2019,  Suffolk County SPCA Detectives charged a Central Islip man with cruelty to animals.
 
Dashawn Belcher, 25, of Central Islip was charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty for failure to provide proper sustenance including food, water and veterinary care. Nila, the starved, emaciated female pit bull, with a body score of 2/9, had untreated open sores and was living in a metal crate filled with feces and urine in a dark basement.  
 
The dog was transported to a Veterinary Hospital for treatment and then transported to Islip Animal Shelter where she is recovering from her injuries.
 
Belcher is schedule to appear in First District Court on October 21, 2019.  
 
Chief Gross said that animal cruelty will not be tolerated in Suffolk County.  If you witness any incident of animal cruelty or neglect in Suffolk County please contact the Suffolk County SPCA at (631) 382-7722.  All calls will be kept confidential.
 
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
