Hempstead, NY - August 19, 2016 - Third Squad detective report the details of an arrest for Overdriving/Torturing Animals that occurred in Hempstead on Monday, 08/15/16 at 11:00 A.M.

According to detectives, Louise Hanif, 56, of Hempstead left her Shit-Tzu dog and Pomeranian dog on the balcony of her apartment building.  The animals were left in full sun exposure with no shade or means of entrance into the apartment.

Hempstead Police officers responded to the location after receiving a complaint of a dog with possible heat exposure.  The officers gained access to the balcony through and adjacent apartment and rendered aid to the animals.  The Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter was contacted and responded.

As a result of the heat exposure, one of the dogs died at scene and the other was removed by the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter for treatment.  It is unknown, at this time, how long the dogs were left on the balcony.

Hanif is being charged with two counts of NYS-Animal Market Law - Overdriving, Torturing Animals.  She will be arraigned on Friday, August 19, 2016 in First District Court, Hempstead.
