LIRR Restores Ronkonkoma Service, Crews Completed Repairs Following Small Plane Crash Onto Tracks

MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) has restored normal service on the Ronkonkoma Branch, following the crash of a small plane onto the tracks at the South Oyster Bay Road crossing in Hicksville.

Hicksville, NY - August 16, 2015 - MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) has restored normal service on the Ronkonkoma Branch, following the crash of a small plane onto the tracks at the South Oyster Bay Road crossing in Hicksville. Regular service will be in place for the Monday morning rush. No other LIRR branches were affected by the crash.

The Ronkonkoma Branch was closed for much of the day while investigators processed the scene and LIRR crews removed the wreckage and repaired damage to the tracks, third rail, crossing gates and other components. One person in the plane was killed and another was taken to Nassau University Medical Center after the crash. No one on the ground was injured. The National Transportation Safety Board sent a representative to the scene and is leading the investigation.

LIRR crews worked closely with the MTA Police Department, the Nassau County Police Department, the Federal Aviation Administration and the NTSB to coordinate investigative, public safety and service restoration activities at the scene.
