Cops: Man Arrested for Allegedly Setting Fire to Hempstead House Garage

The Arson Bomb Squad reports the arrest of a Hempstead man for Arson that originally occurred on Thursday, July 25, 2019 at 12:20 pm in Hempstead.
 
According to detectives, the male victim, 78, was notified by his granddaughter, 21, of a smoke condition in their Duncan Road residence. The smoke was coming from an attached garage. They exited the house and the granddaughter attempted to use a garden hose to put out the fire that was spreading on a garage wall. She was unsuccessful and called 911.  Hempstead Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire.
 
A thorough investigation was conducted and Kaliyh Johnson, 23, was arrested this week.
 
Defendant Johnson is charged with Arson 2nd Degree and was arraigned at First District Court, Hempstead.
 
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
