In partnership with the Montauk Surfcasters Association, the Town of Brookhaven will host its 2nd Annual Keith Romaine Memorial Snapper Derby at Union Avenue Dock in Center Moriches, on Sunday, September 12 from 11am to 3pm. The event will take place rain or shine.

The derby will be open to children up to 18-years-old. Participants need to bring their own fishing pole, bait, and bucket. They will receive a complimentary tee-shirt, while supplies last, donated by the Montauk Surfcasters Association. Prizes will be awarded for different categories including biggest fish and are also being donated by Montauk Surfcasters Association along with the Chamber of Commerce of Moriches.

Keith Romaine was a Brookhaven Town Councilman who died suddenly in 2009 at age 36. He is the son of current Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine.

“The Snapper Derby is the kind of fun community event that Keith championed as a Town Councilman and it is very fitting that it is held in his memory,” said Supervisor Romaine.”

Participants are asked to make a $5 donation to benefit the Joseph Rera Memorial Scholarship Fund. Joseph was a Center Moriches resident and high school student who had a passion for fishing, and often could be found fishing off Union Dock. He passed away in November. The donation will be collected on the day of the event at check-in.

“We are excited to bring this event back for our local families to enjoy an afternoon fishing on our beautiful Moriches Bay,” said Brookhaven Town Councilman Dan Panico. “While the fish were sparse during last year’s derby, we are hopeful that this will be a banner year.”
