Written by Long Island News & PR  |  08. August 2018

Seaford, NY - August 8, 2018 - Senator John Brooks will be co-sponsoring a series of Narcan trainings throughout the 8th Senate District. Senator Brooks, together with the YES Community Counseling Center and the Massapequa Takes Action Coalition, will be helping to raise awareness and teach important skills for family members and friends who want to learn more about this life-saving drug.

“Too many Long Island families are suffering because of this opioid epidemic and we need to help them,” Senator John Brooks said. “In additional to combatting opioid abuse and raising awareness about the dangers of opioids, we also have a responsibility to train families on how to use Narcan to save their loved ones in case of an overdose. I am proud to work with great organizations like the YES Community Counseling Center and the Massapequa Takes Action Coalition to hopefully help save Long Islanders’ lives.”

Jamie Bogenshutz, R, LCSW, CASAC, BCETS, Executive Director of the YES Community Counseling Center, said, “No one can deny that we are living in very turbulent times as we watch more of our neighbors and families experience first-hand the dire consequences of the opiate epidemic. Conducting NARCAN trainings in collaboration with Senator Brooks allows YES to disseminate valuable information and a life-saving resource to those in our community who may be at the greatest risk for overdose.”

Cathy Samuels, Massapequa Takes Action Coalition Coordinator, "MTAC is proud to work with our partners in educating residents to the negative impact and influence of the opioid epidemic. Tonight's meeting provides naloxone training and kits in our efforts to reduce the harm of heroin and opioid overdoes in the Massapequas.”

Narcan (generic name: naloxone hydrochloride injection) can help save someone suffering from an opioid overdose. As the opioid epidemic continues in many communities on Long Island, Senator Brooks and his partner organizations want to help spread the word about Narcan and help more Long Island families gain the skills needed to save loved ones in need.

Upcoming Narcan trainings co-sponsored by Senator Brooks include:

  • Wednesday, August 8th at 7:00 PM at the Massapequa Library
  • Tuesday, August 14th, at 6:00 PM at the Bellmore Public Library.
Additional Narcan trainings will be publicized as they get closer.
