NCPD Reports Fire in Port Washington

Update - August 13, 2014 - The Homicide Squad has identified the deceased individual as Michael MacNeill, 48 of Port Washington. He was identified by the Medical Examiner through DNA.

Port Washington, NY - August 6, 2014 - The Public Information Office reports the details of a fatal fire that occurred on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at 8:17 p.m. in Port Washington.
 
According to police, Port Washington Police responded to a call to a home on Prospect Avenue. Upon their arrival they were met by a 39 year old female and a 2 year old child who they evacuated from the home due to the strong odor of gasoline emanating from the area. As they led the individuals to safety the detached garage exploded and burst into flames. The Port Washington Fire department assisted by numerous additional departments responded to extinguish the fire. The fire caused was damage to some neighboring homes and property. A body of a yet to be identified person was discovered deceased inside the garage. Four fire fighters and one Port Washington Police officer suffered minor injuries.  The investigation is ongoing.
