Suffolk DA: Sentencing for Ex-Islip Town Commissioner on Coercion Convictions

Written by Long Island News & PR  |  03. August 2017

Suffolk County, NY - August 3, 2017 - State Supreme Court Justice Fernando Camacho today sentenced the former public safety commissioner of Islip Town to 840 hours of community service in lieu of a six month jail sentence for being found guilty of coercion charges after a trial last April, Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said.

John Carney was found guilty of coercing three of four job candidates to decline Fire Marshal jobs with the town during his interviews with them in 2016. By getting the declinations, other candidates who scored lower on the civil service test for the Fire Marshal jobs could be interviewed for the positions.

Carney, 55, of West Islip, faced a maximum sentence of one year in jail. Justice Camacho also fined Carney $3,000, the maximum amount allowed by statute.
