Suffolk County Legislature Votes to Appraise Middle Island Property for Open Space Acquisition

Written by Legislator Anker's Office  |  01. August 2018

Hauppauge, NY - August 1, 2018 - On Tuesday, July 17th, 2018, the Suffolk County Legislature voted unanimously to appraise four parcels of land off of Whiskey Road in Middle Island owned by Stone Point Group, LLC, for open space acquisition. The resolution, sponsored by Legislator Sarah Anker, allows the appraisal of four parcels which total approximately 4.43 acres. The property is located in the Pine Barrens Compatible Growth Area (CGA) and adjacent to Suffolk County and Town-owned parkland. If approved, the parcels will be purchased in partnership with the Town of Brookhaven with the County contributing 70% of the purchase price and the Town contributing 30%.

“The preservation of open space is a top priority of mine,” stated Legislator Sarah Anker. “I am proud to be part of the Suffolk County Legislature which has taken a strong lead on acquiring and protecting environmentally sensitive properties to protect our natural ecosystems and vulnerable groundwater aquifer.”

The County will now move forward with appraising the property and determining the fair market value of the parcels. The Legislature will then have to approve the value and authorize an offer to be made to the property owner. If the property owners accept the offer, the Legislature will have to vote to approve the sale of the property. Any environmental remediation that is necessary must be done at the expense of the property owners prior to the closing.
