Juan Martinez of Manorville, 53, reportedly went swimming while lifeguards were off duty, became distressed, and went under water.

SCPD are investigating the death of a man who was pulled from the Ocean in Shirley.

Shirley, NY - July 31, 2018 - Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man who was pulled from the Atlantic Ocean in Shirley on Saturday, July 28.
 
Juan Martinez was swimming at Smith Point County Park when he became distressed and went under water at approximately 8:05 p.m. Martinez, 53, of Manorville, was removed from the water by Suffolk County Police officers and transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue where he was pronounced dead.
 
Personnel from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner will determine Martinez’s cause of death.
 
Lifeguards were off duty at the time of the incident.
