The Royal Baby Has Arrived: Duchess Kate Gives Birth to a Healthy Baby Boy

Written by Joe Randazzo  |  22. July 2013

Kate Middleton, or Duchess Kate as she’s formally referred to as, gave birth to a baby boy today.  He was safely delivered at 4:24 p.m., local time, weighing 8 lbs., 6 oz. The Queen, the Duke of Cambridge, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, and Prince Harry, were all present. A bulletin with details of the child’s birth was taken to Buckingham Palace by car and placed at the palace gates on an easel for the public’s eye.

Both mother and son are healthy and will be remaining in the hospital overnight. She gave birth to her baby boy in a private area of the hospital referred to as the Lindo Wing. This private wing is the same area Princess Diana gave birth to William in 1982 and Harry in 1984.

This year the queen ordered a Royal Decree allowing William and Kate’s children to hold the title of Prince or Princess so the baby boy will be referred to as His Royal Highness Prince [name] of Cambridge. The child’s name has not come out though and palace officials haven’t given a timetable on when that information will be released.

President Obama released a statement on the birth of the royal child saying, “Michelle and I are so pleased to congratulate The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the joyous occasion of the birth of their first child. We wish them all the happiness and blessings parenthood brings. The child enters the world at a time of promise and opportunity for our two nations. Given the special relationship between us, the American people are pleased to join with the people of the United Kingdom as they celebrate the birth of the young prince.”

The baby is the first for William and Kate. The two announced the Duchess was expecting on December 3, 2012. The boy will be the third great-grandchild for Queen Elizabeth and the first nephew of Prince Harry.
