Nassau County Legislator Ellen W. Birnbaum (D –Great Neck) mentored Girl Scout Katerina Gounaris for her Girl Scouts Gold Award project which improved traffic safety in the community.

With the aim of reducing traffic congestion at the intersection of Suburban Gate and New Hyde Park Road, Gounaris worked with Legislator Birnbaum and the Department of Public Works and she conducted a traffic questionnaire with area residents to gather feedback about traffic conditions near the Manhasset Hills community entrance. Based on those findings, a “do not block side road” sign and grid box were installed.

An embodiment of excellence and leadership in Scouting, the Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award that Girl Scout Ambassadors and Seniors can earn.

“Gold Award projects represent the culmination of a Girl Scout’s commitment to leadership and community service,” Legislator Birnbaum said. Thanks to Katerina’s diligence and focus, we will all benefit from traffic-calming improvements that make the roads safer for everyone. I am pleased to have worked with Katerina on this endeavor and look forward to witnessing her future accomplishments.”
