Holbrook, NY - July 17, 2014 - Suffolk County Police arrested a Holbrook man for committing two burglaries of occupied residences in Holbrook yesterday and for attempting to burglarize a third home.

Fifth Precinct patrol officers responded to a home on Hiram Avenue where a 13-year-old resident reported that an unknown man had entered the house while he was there and he saw the man carrying items from an upstairs bedroom. When the burglar noticed that the teen was in the house, he fled in a white Ford pickup truck. A neighbor called 911 and provided a description of the suspect and the vehicle.

Approximately six minutes later, police received another 911call of a burglary on Estelle Avenue in Holbrook, where a 14-year-old boy confronted a burglar inside his residence after hearing the house alarm. The teen yelled and the suspect fled.

Based on the descriptions provided by the victims and other witnesses, Fifth Precinct patrol officers were able to locate the vehicle and arrest the burglar.

Fifth Squad detectives have charged Joseph Schreck, 25, of 158 Arnold St., Holbrook with two counts of Burglary 2nd Degree. He was also charged with one count of Attempted Burglary 2nd Degree after it was learned that Schreck had attempted to break into another home on Estelle Avenue, but was unsuccessful. Schreck is also facing charges by the Sixth Precinct Crime Section for a petit larceny that occurred in February at a CVS store in Holbrook.

Neither of the teens was injured. Schreck is being held at the Fifth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned this morning at First District Court in Central Islip.

The investigation is continuing and detectives are asking anyone with any information to contact the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.
