Bohemia Church Overhauls Hot Dog Truck for Single Mom

Written by Jen Hinst White  |  17. July 2013

Bohemia, NY - July 17th, 2013 - True North Community Church will celebrate the Grand Re-Opening of Hot Diggity Dog, a local hot dog truck, this Sunday, July 21 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and 7:30 to 9:00 pm at 1101 Lakeland Ave., Bohemia. A short film about the community effort to transform Hot Diggity Dog will be shown at each service (9:00 am, 10:15 am, 11:30 am, 7:30 pm), followed by hot dogs and soda for sale.

One year ago, True North volunteer Brienne Rush was operating her hot dog truck in Wading River when Pastor Bert Crabbe stopped by for lunch. “The food was delicious,” he said, “but the truck was falling apart.” Aware that Rush was a single mother, Pastor Crabbe proposed an idea to his church staff: Why not launch a homegrown Overhaulin’--a church-wide effort to renovate the truck and get Rush back on her feet?

The church responded enthusiastically. Despite numerous challenges--Superstorm Sandy, Blizzard Nemo, a budget entirely made up of donations, and a mostly-volunteer labor crew--the community came together to see the project through. Ten months later, Rush’s business is starting to take off.

“We used to pray that the truck’s generator would come on,” Rush says. Now with her new generator, new kitchen equipment, and splashy new exterior, “Business is booming to the point where I’m selling out every day.”

When asked her dreams for the future, Brienne says that she hopes not only for continued success and financial security for her daughter and herself, but also “to keep the friendship and the closeness with the many people who have volunteered on this truck. I’ve met some amazing people.”
