Shoreham, NY - July 16, 2014 - On Thursday, July 10th Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined the volunteers of the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe, Shoreham residents, and elected officials for the First Annual Nikola Tesla Day. The celebration, which took place on the 158th birthday of Nikola Tesla, was held at Tesla’s former Wardenclyffe laboratory in Shoreham. The ceremony included the raising of Federal, State, County, Town, and village flags, and special guest appearances by Nikola Tesla’s great nephew William Turbo, and W. Bernard Carlson, author of the biography Nikola Tesla: Visionary of the Information Age.

To aid in the local preservation of the inventor’s legacy, Legislator Anker successfully passed legislation to perpetually designate July 10th, as countywide “Nikola Tesla Day”. Legislator Anker presented a Suffolk County proclamation to the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe commemorating the inaugural day.

“I am proud to join the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe in commemorating the First Nikola Tesla Day,” said Legislator Anker. “I commend the members of the organization for the awareness they have brought to our community. Thanks to their dedication and vision, Suffolk County will never forget Nikola Tesla’s vast contributions to modern day technology.”

To make the celebration even more memorable, Tesla Science Center President Jane Alcorn announced that Elon Musk, owner of the Tesla Motors automobile company, has pledged $1 million to the future science museum. In addition, Tesla Motors will also be providing a vehicle charging station in the museum's parking lot. For more information about the Tesla Science Center, visit teslasciencecenter.org.
