The Town of Huntington and the Centerport Harbor Civic Association are proud to announce a special memorial ceremony honoring the late Gloria Wertheimer, a lifelong champion of community preservation and civic engagement. The unveiling of a memorial stone in her honor will take place on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Heron Park in Centerport, near the "Hope" monument at the end of the brick path from Mill Dam Road.

Gloria Wertheimer, who passed away peacefully at the age of 92, leaves behind a legacy of passionate advocacy for the environment and public spaces in the Centerport area. Her efforts were instrumental in the preservation and transformation of local parks including Grist Mill Park, Alvernia Park, and Heron Park—green spaces that continue to serve as cherished community havens.

As the first president of the Centerport Civic Association, Gloria led numerous successful initiatives to protect open spaces, including the conservation of 13 acres along Prospect Road—now known as Alvernia Park under Suffolk County’s “Forever Wild” program. Her vision and tireless work helped shape Centerport into the vibrant and nature-rich community it is today.

Councilwoman Theresa Mari, who sponsored the resolution authorizing the memorial, stated:

“Gloria Wertheimer’s unwavering dedication to her community has left an indelible mark on the Town of Huntington. Her legacy of stewardship, civic leadership, and environmental advocacy continues to inspire us all.”

In collaboration with Gloria’s family, the Centerport Harbor Civic Association has also launched a commemorative brick campaign. Bricks were installed along the park path to honor community members and help fund the memorial project. The Town’s Department of General Services is assisted with elements of the installation, including landscaping and brick placement.

The public is invited to attend the ceremony and join in celebrating the life and legacy of a remarkable woman who gave so much to her hometown.
