Mangano and Community College Save Volunteer Firefighters Recruitment and Retention Scholarship for 2014-15 Academic Year

Nassau County, NY - July 9, 2014 - Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and Acting President of Nassau Community College (NCC) Dr. Kenneth Saunders today announced funding to ensure the continuation of the Volunteer Firefighter Recruitment and Retention Scholarship Program that provides volunteers with reimbursement for tuition at NCC for the 2014-2015 academic year. The scholarship was placed in jeopardy when the County was notified that no Federal funding would be available for this semester.
 
County Executive Mangano stated, “This scholarship program assists volunteer fire departments with their recruitment efforts to ensure a well-educated group of volunteer firefighters and EMS providers are will be available to protect our communities.”
 
Dr. Kenneth Saunders, Acting President of Nassau Community College, added, “The County and College have reached a resolution so that the volunteer firefighter recruitment and retention scholarship will continue for the 2014-2015 academic year. Encouraging increased participation by firefighters and EMS providers in the volunteer fire services in Nassau County through assisting students in paying for their education is a plan that’s a property protector, a life saver and a dream maker.”
