Mastic, NY - July 10th, 2014 - Suffolk County Police today arrested a man for fleeing police after he ran across Sunrise Highway and once detained, gave the officer a fake name which he could not spell.

An officer from the Highway Patrol Bureau observed an unattended motorcycle on the left shoulder of westbound Sunrise Highway, just east of Winters Drive, in Mastic, at approximately 9:45 a.m.  The officer then spotted a man, Jason Quick, running east in the highway’s center median.  Quick told the officer that his helmet flew off his head and that he was attempting to retrieve it.  The officer retrieved the helmet and asked Quick to move the bike to a safe location.

The officer asked Quick his name and Quick stated it was Jonathan, however, after multiple attempts, Quick was unable to spell the name correctly. The officer warned Quick that it is illegal to give a false name.  Quick then stated his name was Joseph, which the officer discovered was actually Quick’s brother’s name.  Quick eventually gave the officer his name.  When the officer went to his sector car to run Quick’s name, Quick fled northbound on foot, ran across Sunrise Highway and into a wooded area at approximately 9:55 a.m.

Seventh Precinct, Canine Section, Aviation Section and Parks Police officers, assisted in the search.  During the search, several residents called 911 alerting police of the suspect’s whereabouts.  A Seventh Precinct patrol officer arrested Quick at Brookhaven Calabro Airport at approximately 10:30 a.m.

Quick, 24, of Manorville, was arrested and charged with Criminal Impersonation 2nd Degree, Disorderly Conduct, Resisting Arrest, Criminal Trespass 3rd Degree, and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle 2nd Degree.  Quick was also issued three traffic violation citations.

Quick will be held at the Seventh Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on July 10.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
