Chris Weidman, an ultimate fighter from Baldwin, pulled a huge upset Saturday night after knocking out Anderson Silva and taking the UFC Middleweight Title during UFC 162 in Las Vegas. Silva had held the title for almost seven years, and this was the first loss of his UFC career.

Weidman started off strong in the fight, taking down Silva in the first thirty seconds. Silva was able to avoid some shots from Weidman, and eventually get back on his feet. But it was all downhill from there for Silva.

During the two rounds, Silva made it obvious that he was not taking Weidman seriously. As he’s been known to do during fights, Silva began goofing off and taunting Weidman, which clearly did not sit well.
 
As the taunting continued from Silva, Weidman was able to step in with a left hook and take Silva down with 1:18 left in the second round.

“I’ve imagined being in this situation over and over again,” 29-year-old Weidman said in an interview with ESPN. “This was my goal, this felt like my destiny.”

Weidman was a wrestler when he attended Baldwin High School. He won both the Nassau County and New York State wrestling championships while in high school. He went on to attend Hofstra, where he was a two-time Division I All-American, and placed third at the NCAA tournament during his senior year.

He began his UFC career in 2011 when he defeated Alessio Sakara by way of unanimous decision. He went on to win six more fights in the UFC, including the Middleweight Title fight against Silva. Weidman remains undefeated in both the UFC and throughout his Mixed Martial Arts career.

Although Silva has told news sources that he does not want to compete for the belt again, that seems unlikely. Silva has a history of saying wild things to the media, and there is no doubt that UFC President Dana White will push the veteran fighter to rematch Weidman for the title.
