"It is with great pleasure that I congratulate Rocco Longo and Britney Jahrmarkt from West Babylon High School and Brian Palacios Paz from Brentwood High School, for receiving the NYS Senate Youth Leadership Award,” said Senator Phil Boyle. “I am pleased to recognize these future leaders for their exceptional abilities and their determination to make a difference in our communities. I encourage all students to find ways in which they can positively influence the lives of others both within their neighborhoods and throughout our state."

The New York State Senate’s Youth Leadership Recognition Awards program recognizes and honors outstanding students who possess the qualities to be a future leader. Nominations come from teachers, administrators, counselors, or other school faculty for well-rounded candidates who excel not only academically, but also through leadership in extracurricular and volunteer activities. The four qualifying categories includes Academics, Athletics, Arts and Community Service.

“Britney Jahrmarkt is endearing, hardworking and fun loving, the girl that everyone wants to be friends with,” said Brianne Hyer, Briteny’s West Babylon School Counselor. “Britney is compassionate and self-motivated. She is a leader. A confidant. A breath of fresh air.”

"Rocco is an inspiration to West Babylon community both in and out of the classroom,” said Stephen Dombo, Rocco’s West Babylon Guidance Counselor. “He has a bright future ahead of him and will be a great addition to Catholic University campus this fall."

Col. Robert W. Kaelin, Brian’s AFJROTC Instructor had this to say about Brian, “Cadet Lt Col Brian Palacios Paz has been selected and is truly deserving of the position of Commander of the Corps of Cadets for NY-773 at Brentwood High School, which is a distinguished AFJROTC unit of some 300+ high school students. He has earned this privilege and prestigious position through hard work, dedication to the Corps and a selfless spirit of always doing the right thing, even when no one is looking. That is what integrity is all about!  He is a true leader and I have high expectations of him during the upcoming school year. There is no doubt in my mind that he will perform outstandingly and bring closer together a group of students who truly espouse the adage of “always ready; second to none!”

The NYS Senate Youth Leadership Awards are presented annually, each spring, to deserving high school juniors and seniors by their local District Senators.
