Canine Officer Rescues 76-Year-Old Man with Special Needs Who Was Lost in the Woods

Yaphank, NY - June 28, 2016  - Suffolk County Police Canine Section Officer rescued a 76-year-old man who suffers from dementia and was last seen at his home on Saturday.

Sixth Precinct Officer Keith Boles responded to a residence on Gerard Road in Yaphank at approximately 3 p.m. after a caregiver notified police that the man he looks after, Robert Barrett, 76, had been missing since Saturday.  Canine Section Officer Robert Fanwick responded with his partner, Sparks, and searched the property. Sparks searched the area and was able to locate Barrett in a wooded area behind his residence.  Barrett was found partially clothed, sunburned, covered with ticks and disoriented.

Barrett was transported by Yaphank Fire Department Rescue to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue where he was treated.
