Two Willliam Floyd Employees Honored by Suffolk ASSET for Use of Technology

Written by WFSD News  |  30. June 2015

Mastic Beach, NY - June 26, 2015 - Two William Floyd School District members, Dr. Paul Casciano, Superintendent of Schools, and Melissa Connolly, a kindergarten teacher at Moriches Elementary School, were honored earlier this month at the Suffolk Association of Suffolk Supervisors for Educational Technologies (ASSET) annual end of year luncheon.

Mrs. Connolly was recognized for her “valuable contributions to education through the use of technology in the William Floyd School District.” Through the William Floyd Teacher Center, she piloted a program with the use of 12 iPads, seven of which were rotated throughout Moriches Elementary School and five of which were in her classroom. Using STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) related applications on the iPads, Connolly is working with her colleagues to enhance instruction by incorporating it into the classroom. Using this technology, students are able to conduct science research and enhance their literacy skills.

Dr. Casciano, who is retiring on June 30 after a distinguished 41-year career in the district, was one of only two superintendents from Suffolk County recognized for his “unwavering support and commitment to education and technology in the William Floyd School District.”

“It is always an honor to recognize our staff members at the annual ASSET luncheon,” said Tricia Interrante, Coordinator of Technology, William Floyd School District. “It is even more special recognizing an outstanding teacher that is a leader in the implementation of technology in her classroom and one of the first pilot teachers in our largest technology initiative in district history – interactive white boards.  Mrs. Connolly is one of our go-to staff members for technology leadership,” she said. “Getting an opportunity to honor Dr. Casciano was an added bonus as he has been a huge supporter of technology integration throughout my tenure at William Floyd and we could not have accomplished what we have without him.”
