WFHS Foreign Language Students Visit El Museo del Barrio on Cultural Field Trip

Written by WFSD News  |  28. June 2015

East Harlem, NY - June 25, 2015 - Students from Derek Robinson’s Spanish 4 classes at William Floyd High School recently had a unique opportunity to explore the work of cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa at an exhibit at El Museo del Barrio, one of New York’s leading cultural centers for Latin American art

The exhibit, entitled “Under the Mexican Sky,” invited students to explore silent films, still photography and paintings for contrast, composition and perspective, and analyze how these components bring feeling to the artist’s work. The trip was organized by Mr. Robinson, with assistance from Ms. Kimberly Worhle, Foreign Language Department Chair, and Ms. Carol Janowicz Advanced Placement Spanish teacher. Following the students’ tour of the exhibit they participated in a workshop where they had the opportunity to infuse their own interpretation of light, contrast and perspective into a beach scene. They then proudly displayed and explained their own works of art. The field trip was the culmination of a unit focused on the significance of Spanish Harlem to Latino culture.

“Giving students a chance to experience the culture firsthand is what the study of language is all about,” said Mr. Robinson. “The students left with a new understanding and respect for the artwork they viewed.”
