North Carolina Man Arrested for Driving Drunk with Multiple Children in Vehicle, NCPD Reports

The Nassau County Police Department reports the arrest of a North Carolina man for DWI-Leandra’s law in Westbury.
 
According to police, an officer while on routine patrol observed Tommie Hooks, 42, operating a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox exiting a parking lot at 1504 Old Country Road. The defendant drove directly through a red light while turning westbound onto Old Country Road. The officer engaged his emergency lights and initiated a car stop. 
 
During the investigation it was discovered that the defendant emitted the odor of alcohol on his breath, and had slurred speech, and glassy eyes. The defendant was placed under arrest without incident. The defendant’s 15 and 10 year old sons were passengers in the vehicle, as well as an 11 year old niece, 7 year old nephew, and 38 year old male cousin. All four children were released to a family member at scene. The passengers were not injured.
 
The defendant, Tommie Hooks, is charged with four (4) counts of Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated (Child under 16- Leandra’s Law), four (4) counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, two (2) counts of Driving While Intoxicated, and numerous VTL infractions. He was arraigned at First District Court, 99 Main Street in Hempstead.
 
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
