Port Jeff Mother Arrested for Leaving Son Home Alone

Port Jefferson, NY - June 21st, 2014 - Suffolk County Police today arrested a woman for leaving her son home alone with no adult supervision overnight and into this afternoon.
 
A six-year-old boy stopped a Port Jefferson Village Constable at approximately 12:25 p.m. and told him he was home alone. Sixth Precinct Crime Section officers responded and determined the boy had been left home alone since 8 p.m. last night.
 
After an investigation, police arrested the boy’s mother, Melissa Weiner, 31, of 129 Windward Drive, Port Jefferson. She was charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
 
The boy, who was not injured, was released to a family member. Child Protective Services were notified.
 
Weiner will be held at the 4th Precinct in Hauppauge, and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on June 21.
 
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
