NCPD: Carlos Miguel Torres Ferreira, 38, called the victim and said his grandson needed $9,700 for bail.
First Squad detectives report the arrest of a Bronx man for an incident involving an elderly scam that occurred in East Meadow.
According to detectives, a 78 year old victim reported to detectives that he received a phone call from an individual claiming to be his grandson. The individual then instructed the victim to call the public defender’s office as he was under arrest for DWI. The victim called a phone number that was given to him and was informed that his grandson needed $9,700 for bail. The victim, who does not have a grandson, contacted detectives who arraigned to meet the subject.
A meeting place and time was then set up to deliver the money as well as exchanging descriptions of vehicles and identities. An investigating detective, in place of the victim, drove to the agreed upon meeting location, the Green Turtle Restaurant, 1740 Hempstead Turnpike, located the subject who was on foot, confirmed the transaction and attempted to place Carlos Miguel Torres Ferreira, 38, under arrest. With the assistance of nearby detectives and officers, Ferreira, who resisted arrest, was eventually placed into custody.
Ferreira is charged with Attempted Grand Larceny 3rd Degree and Resisting Arrest. He was arraigned in First District Court, Hempstead.
