In recognition of National Homeownership Month and the 2022 REALTORS® Are Good Neighbors Volunteer Days, Long Island Board of REALTORS® (LIBOR) recently joined Habitat for Humanity of Long Island (HFHLI) to help build a home for a deserving family in Shirley, NY.

As leading advocates for sustainable housing opportunities, Long Island REALTORS® work diligently to help families achieve the American dream of homeownership. LIBOR and its members are proud to partner with organizations, such as HFHLI, whose mission is to see these dreams become a reality by breaking barriers and creating affordable housing opportunities for low to mid-income families in our communities.

LIBOR’s dedicated team of REALTOR® volunteers spent the day alongside HFHLI site supervisors, spackling and other finishing work inside the home, as well as outside clean-up, to prime the property for the new family of four to come.

“Both Long Island Board of REALTORS® and Habitat for Humanity of Long Island share the conviction that everyone deserves a safe place to call home. Our partnership represents LIBOR’s commitment to helping to create affordable housing, build strong communities, and encourage the pride in homeownership throughout Long Island,” said LIBOR CEO Tessa Hultz.

June was designated National Homeownership Month, to celebrate the importance of owning a home and the impact it has on the lives of American families, local communities, and the nation's economic health. This month marks the 20th anniversary of National Homeownership Month, whose national spotlight began in 1995 as a weeklong recognition first proclaimed to last the entire month in June 2002 under former President George W. Bush.

“We are excited to be part of this year’s National Homeownership Month celebration and to join forces with LIBOR to help with our mission to strengthen communities and combat the affordable housing crisis on Long Island. Today we are one step closer to completing the future home for Jessica, Zachary, and their children.” said Lee Silberman, CEO and Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Long Island.

The REALTOR® volunteer effort coincided with the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) 2022 REALTORS® Are Good Neighbors Volunteer Days, which runs from June 4 - 12. Through this annual program, REALTORS® are encouraged to join in on the nationwide philanthropic week-long initiative to showcase the time and effort they’ve dedicated to strengthening their communities.

“Across the country, almost 66% of all REALTORS® volunteer monthly in their community. Giving back is part of who we are as both people and as professionals,” said LIBOR President Kevin Loiacono. “For LIBOR members who have a heart for service and a passion for giving back, it is a natural fit to work alongside HFHLI to support their efforts in advancing homeownership throughout Long Island.”

In addition to providing volunteer labor, LIBOR contributed $2,500, to help in the construction of the home. For the past 16 years, LIBOR has sponsored the building of Habitat for Humanity homes across Long Island.
