Furry Friends Welcomed at These Long Island Beaches

Gardiner County Park

Bay Shore

Gardiner County Park provides the best of both worlds: a short 15-20 minute hike in the woods and a sandy beach made for long walks. Leash laws are enforced in the wooded area of the park, but owners commonly let dogs roam freely to swim. It’s a popular spot for social dogs to make new friends and the Great South Bay location offers views of Robert Moses, Fire Island and several bridges.

Mud Creek

Patchogue

Natural borders of sand dunes and water make Mud Creek Dog Park a wonderful, secluded area to let pups burn off energy. There is a designated off-leash area for swimming and running on the 300-foot beach.

Coindre Hall (West Neck Farm)

Huntington

Along with Gatsby vibes, this Gold Coast estate has trails in the woods and a small beach at the Huntington Harbor shore. It’s a popular place for dog owners to take their pets for an afternoon walk and a quick dip in the water. This park does enforce leash use, including during swim time.

Heckscher State Park

East Islip

Heckscher State Park is a popular hang out for families and has areas for dogs to cool off. Pets are only allowed access in undeveloped areas and must be on a leash no longer than six feet. But as long as your water-loving hound stays out of bathing and picnic areas and buildings, he’s allowed to catch some waves and sunrays right along with you.

Fire Island Beaches

Fire Island is a popular summer spot for locals and animals alike. To protect the wildlife that uses the rich habitat, pets are restricted from March 15 to Labor Day on the Fire Island National Seashore ocean beaches. During this time, pets are allowed on the boardwalks, the Watch Hill playground and several bayside beaches such as the Fire Island Lighthouse, Sailors Haven, Talisman/Barrett Beach and Smith Point Beach. Low tide is the best time to go since dogs must be leashed and may pull to get to the water.
