Highway patrol officers in the Suffolk County Police Department can be called on to respond to a number of different things. One thing they don’t expect is to help in the rescue and recovery of an errand, injured swan. But that’s the call that Highway Patrol Officer Matthew Cody found himself responding to recently on the eastbound Sunrise Highway in Oakdale.

The task involved help from a few good Samaritans, who were able to wrangle the swan into the back of Cody’s police car. Cody transported the swan to Sweet Briar Nature Center in Smithtown where it will be nursed back to health.
