Hauppauge, NY / East Moriches, NY - May 27, 2016 - Teachers Federal Credit Union (TFCU), one of the country’s largest credit unions, recently supported a “Penny War” held at the East Moriches Middle School. The object of a Penny War is to collect as many points as possible with one point awarded for every penny collected. The students conducted this fundraising drive to raise money for a mosaic that now hangs in the entrance hall of the school.

“A Penny War generates a healthy competitive spirit among students. This program at East Moriches Middle School taught students that enough pennies will add up to a substantial amount of money. The mosaic is a colorful and impressive addition to the school and TFCU is pleased to contribute to its placement at the entrance where it will stand as a constant reminder to young people about the importance of understanding the value of money,” said Robert G. Allen, TFCU President/CEO.

The students got into the spirit and, in one week’s time, raised over $3,600.  TFCU recognized the students for their efforts and added $1,000, the maximum agreed upon match to the total raised by the students.

During a ceremony at the school, the mosaic was revealed by East Moriches Middle School Principal Mike Carlson. At this event he accepted the $1,000 check on behalf of the school from Suzanne Gillan, TFCU Wading River Financial Services Manager.
