Let LIRR Be Your Way to the Beach This Summer

Long Island, NY - May 26, 2015 - After a long winter, summer is finally unofficially kicking off this Memorial Day weekend, and the Long Island Rail Road is offering special getaway packages to get you to 12 of Long Island’s sandy destinations. These special beach packages are available throughout the summer.

“After a winter we thought would never end it’s nice to start thinking about Long Island’s beautiful beach destinations,” said Long Island Rail Road President Patrick A. Nowakowski. “With a dozen getaways to choose from, the LIRR is really a great way to enjoy the sun and the sand while saving time and money.”

LIRR Beach Getaways:

Long Beach
Beachgoers can enjoy the ambiance of a seaside resort with a new boardwalk which is a short train ride from Penn Station, Brooklyn or Jamaica. Just a few blocks from the LIRR's Long Beach Station, Long Beach offers unsurpassed ocean swimming and a short walk to many local eateries. The fastest way to the beach on weekends and holidays is the Long Beach Express Train which leaves Penn Station at 10:31 a.m. The discounted package ticket includes one-day round trip rail fare to Long Beach Station, discounted admission to the beach, coupons for a round-trip ride on the Long Beach Bus and discounts at participating vendors. The getaway package is $22.75 from New York City and Brooklyn, and $19.50 from Jamaica. Hourly off peak service is available from Penn Station, Brooklyn and Jamaica with direct weekend service from Penn Station. The LIRR package is available weekends May 23- June 21, Memorial Day, 5/25, then daily June 24 to Sept 7.

Jones Beach
Jones Beach State Park offers miles of sandy beaches and refreshing ocean surf. A two-mile-long boardwalk, games, playgrounds, and swimming pools are also available at the park. The discounted package ticket includes round trip rail fare to and from Freeport Station and bus service via the NICE N88 to and from the East and West Bath Houses or the Central Mall. The getaway package is $20.50 from New York City and Brooklyn, and $17.00 from Jamaica. And, if you bring the kids along, there’s a $2.00 round-trip LIRR Family Fare for those aged 5 to 11. Children under 5 ride free The LIRR package is available May 23-25, then daily June 27 through Labor Day, September 7.

Fire Island Beaches
The LIRR offers special packages to ten Fire Island beach locations. Fire Island provides an opportunity to leave the car behind and enjoy miles of boardwalk, trails and pristine beaches. Packages are for same day use only. Not valid Fridays after 5:30 p.m.

Take the LIRR to Bay Shore Station and board a David Brothers Taxi to the Fire Island Ferries (same day vouchers included in package price) for the following destinations:

Kismet/Fire Island Lighthouse
Intensely informal, carefree and easygoing, Kismet is known as a great community with something for everyone. Amenities include a couple of full service restaurants, two public tennis courts, a basketball court, and playground area. Just a half-mile from the beach is the 150 year-old-plus Fire Island Lighthouse. General admission to the Lighthouse is included in the package. For information and events, click here. The getaway package is $38.25 from New York City and Brooklyn and $37.75 from Jamaica. For children 5 to11 years of age the fare is $21.00; Children must be at least 42" tall to climb to the top of the lighthouse. Ocean Beach
Home to over a dozen restaurants, hotels, and endless attractions such as sidewalk sales, live bands, and innumerable shops and boutiques, Ocean Beach is truly the 'cosmopolitan' center of Fire Island. Ocean Beach has an excellent nightlife while keeping its popular reputation as a great family destination. The getaway package is $34.25 from New York and Brooklyn and $33.75 from Jamaica. For children 5 to11 years of age the fare is $17.00. The LIRR package begins May 23 and continues daily through Labor Day, September 7.

Ocean Bay Park
One of the most relaxed of the Fire Island communities, Ocean Bay Park has a mix of families and singles. Bay-front dining is available at two of the four restaurants. There is also a grocery store, two pizza places and a bagel shop. The getaway package is $34.25 from New York City and Brooklyn and $33.75 from Jamaica. For children 5 to 11 years of age the fare is $17.00. The LIRR package begins May 23 and continues daily through Labor Day, September 7.

Take the LIRR to Sayville Station and board a Colonial Taxi to the Sayville Ferry for the following destinations:

Cherry Grove
Known for its artistic expression and locally produced murals, Cherry Grovers enjoy dancing, dining and fun. The shops and restaurants are all brilliantly colored and built on multi-levels, so you can find something for everyone. The getaway package is $33.25 from New York City and Brooklyn, and $32.75 from Jamaica. The LIRR package begins May 23 and continues daily through Labor Day, September 7.

Fire Island Pines
"The Pines" named for the beautiful wind-sculpted pine trees, is truly an architectural paradise and the largest community on the Island. Populated with delightful markets, boutiques and restaurants, it is well known for its upscale social life and beautiful harbor. The getaway package is $33.255 from New York City and Brooklyn, and $32.75 from Jamaica. The LIRR package begins May 23 and continues daily through Labor Day, September 7.

Sunken Forest at Sailors' Haven
Sailor's Haven is a Fire Island National Seashore Park and home to the Sunken Forest – a vast eco-system of plants and wildlife. A visitors' center with nature exhibits, picnic areas, a snack bar and a gift shop are located on the bay front near the marina and ferry dock. The getaway package from New York City and Brooklyn is $31.25, and $30.75 from Jamaica. For children 5 to 11 years of age the fare is $17.00. The LIRR package begins June 19 and continues daily through Labor Day, September 7.

Take the LIRR to Patchogue Station and board Lindy’s Taxi to the Davis Park Ferry for the following destinations:

Davis Park
On one end, a huge boat-filled marina, on the other magnificent ocean waves form this community's great landscape. After sunbathing, enjoy the only beachfront restaurant on Fire Island and stay for live music on the weekends. The getaway package is $37.50 from New York City or Brooklyn and $37.00 from Jamaica. For children 5 to 11 years of age the fare is $27.00. The LIRR package begins May 23 and continues daily through Labor Day, September 7.

Watch Hill
Watch Hill is a great starting point for all things outdoors with its peaceful ocean beach and nature trails. It’s a relaxing spot for singles and families. The getaway package is $32.00 from New York City and Brooklyn and $25.75 from Jamaica. For children 5 to 11 years of age the fare is $17.00. The LIRR package begins May 23 and continues daily through Labor Day, September 7.

Robert Moses
Located on the western tip of Fire Island, Robert Moses State Park offers world-class sand and surf in a serene setting. The Park has five miles of ocean beach, picnic areas and an 18-hole pitch & putt golf course. The getaway package from New York City and Brooklyn is $24.25 and $19.25 from Jamaica. The connecting S47 Suffolk Bus, from Babylon Station to Robert Moses, operates approximately every half hour on weekends; hourly on weekdays. For Suffolk bus information, click here. Captree Fishing
Captree is a fisherman's haven and a picnicker's delight, so pack a lunch and enjoy a day of fishing while taking in the beautiful views. And no need to bring fishing gear, it's all part of the package price which includes discounted one-day round-trip rail fare to/from Babylon Station, connecting S47 Suffolk Bus transportation and admission on one of Captree’s fishing boats. LIRR Beach Getaway Information
If you are buying tickets at LIRR Gray, Blue or Green ticket machines: Press the “Getaways/Packages” button on the first screen, then select “Beach Getaways,” then the button for your package or deal. All machines accept credit cards and debit cards. Gray and green machines also accept cash.
