To keep pace with the rapidly growing needs of the disabled community on Long Island, Independent Group Home Living (IGHL) recently renovated its historic, two-story residence, providing renewed and accommodating living space.

IGHL is an affiliate member of the new Kinexion network, launched in May to organize an existing family of affiliate organizations, with 10,000 employees serving more than 4,000 developmentally and physically disabled people on Long Island.

The renovation included upgrading the existing space to fit the needs of its residents while maintaining the historical essence and complying with Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) standards.

Located in the Historic District of Center Moriches, the home was built in the mid-1700s as patronage for the Presbyterian Church.

“Many of the features in this home did not meet the IGHL standards and the medical accommodations to meet the needs of those who call it home,” said Walter Stockton, President & CEO of the Kinexion Network, of which IGHL is an affiliate partner.  “These renovations have brought the house up to modern standards that support the continued growth and aging needs of the nine people who call it home and supports the historical value of the Center Moriches community.”

The renovation provides an ADA accessible toilet on the first floor living area and upgrades that conform with the needs of the disabled in the kitchen. Added was an additional bathroom, laundry room, bedroom on the second floor, and storage space built throughout the home. A new roof, windows, doors, and hardy plank siding were also installed.
